What is the history of the Company?
The oldest corporate ancestor was a glass manufacturing plant founded in 1879 in Glassboro, New Jersey. In 1886, Edward Drummond Libbey moved to Toledo, Ohio, from Cambridge, Massachusetts, where he hired a young inventor named Michael J. Owens. In the early 1900's, with financial backing from Edward Libbey, Michael Owens invented the automatic glass bottle-making machine, and in 1903 the Owens Bottle Machine Company was formed. In 1919, the Owens Bottle Machine Company changed its name to The Owens Bottle Company. In 1929, The Owens Bottle Company, which operated several glass factories, acquired the assets of the Illinois Glass Company, a licensee, and changed its name to Owens-Illinois Glass Company. In the early 1965, recognizing the diverse nature of the Company's operations, our name was changed to Owens-Illinois, Inc. In January 2020, the Company restructured and is now called O-I Glass, Inc.
